A man has appeared in court charged with child cruelty after a toddler was found injured at a property in Surrey.

Officers were called to an address in Woodthorpe Road, Ashford, at 13:15 GMT on Thursday, where they found the injured two-year-old.

Police say they also found a woman in her 20s with serious injuries at the property. She later died at the scene.

Milad Ghafari, 34, of Woodthorpe Road, appeared before magistrates on Tuesday. He has been remanded in custody and is due to appear at Guildford Crown Court on 20 February.

Police say they are still working to establish the circumstances around the woman's death.
