MP criticises coordination over transport projects

A Surrey MP has criticised "poor coordination" between bodies involved with transport improvement schemes, including the recent closure of the A3.

Dr Ben Spencer, the MP for Runnymede and Weybridge, has written to the government over "unnecessary levels of disruption" for communities.

National Highways shut a stretch of the A3 in January as part of a project to improve junction 10 of the M25 on the same weekend that Network Rail carried out engineering works.

National Highways said it works with other organisations to minimise disruption during road closures.

The Department for Transport and Network Rail has also been contacted for a comment.

On social media, Dr Spencer said it was in issue he had already raised with transport agencies.

He added: "Unnecessary levels of disruption are being caused across our communities as a result of poor coordination of major projects, maintenance and engineering works across our transport networks.

"Just last month we again faced disruption due to major rail engineering works, on the same weekend as a major road closure on the A3."

A spokesperson for National Highways said: "We work with other organisations and stakeholders to coordinate closures or diversion to minimise disruption.

"Our job is to keep the country moving, and we carefully plan all our closures, often carrying out work at night and over weekends when traffic is at its lightest."
