The family of a cyclist who was killed in a collision with a car have said they are "devastated" by his death.

Keith Hornby, 63, died after his mountain bike crashed with a black Volkswagen car at the junction of Tarbock Road and Manley Road in Huyton on 5 March, Merseyside Police said.

Paying tribute, his relatives said Mr Hornby was a "family man" who was the main carer for his mother who is due to turn 90 this week, and his "main hobby was bike riding".

James O'Donnell, 34, of Huyton, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Mr O'Donnell, of Cypress Road, has also been charged with aggravated vehicle taking, driving a motor vehicle when the alcohol level is above the limit, driving whilst unfit through drugs and failing to stop after a road accident and failing to report a road accident.

He was due to appear at Wirral Adult Remand Court on Friday.

In a tribute Mr Hornby's family said: "The whole family are devastated with Keith's death and are struggling to come to terms with how it occurred.

"Keith was a father, son, brother, brother-in-law and an uncle to his nieces and nephews."

They said his main hobby was bike riding, and he had followed "the same route for the last 20 years or so", adding: "Many people would have seen Keith riding his dark blue mountain bike."

The tribute added: "Keith recently celebrated his brother and niece's birthday and was looking forward to his mother's 90th birthday on 14 March.

"Sadly, this will not be the same now."
