A donation scheme has been launched at council-run museums and galleries in Leeds, as the local authority faces "unprecedented financial pressures".

The "Give What You Can" donation points will allow visitors to contribute to four of the eight sites run by Leeds City Council.

Points are being introduced at Leeds Art Gallery, Leeds City Museum and Kirkstall Abbey, while people can also donate online to Leeds Discovery Centre.

Salma Arif from the council said its priority was to "ensure these remarkable cultural assets remain accessible and sustainable, both now and in the future".

The BBC previously spoke to visitors to the museums about their thoughts on the proposal, with many saying they would be happy to contribute.

The money will be used for the care and conservation of the venues and collections which include more than 1.3m objects.

The model will replace the annual pass system previously used at Kirkstall Abbey.

Arif, Leeds City Council's executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture, said it was "no secret" that the local authority and its attractions faced financial challenges.

She said: "These new donation points will give those that can afford it the opportunity to donate a set amount of their choice whilst also ensuring those who aren't able to donate can still enjoy the city's incredible attractions."
