Plans to repair sea defences at landfill site

New sea defences look set to be built up close to a former landfill site.

The 820-foot (250 metres) section is next to the former South Walney landfill site in Walney, Cumbria.

Westmorland and Furness Council, which is behind the plans, said the "rudimentary" defences put in in the 1980s had washed out.

The authority said although it had taken some temporary measures to repair damage, "a long-term solution needed to be provided for the worst affected sections".

Planning documents showed that a lack of a filter layer below the rock armour was probably the reason the previous defences failed.

Existing rock armour would be reused where appropriate if plans are approved, the council added.
