People reported having their dogs poisoned at Kismet Park in Canvey Island

Police arrested a 73-year-old man after rat poison was reported to have been hidden in food and scattered across a park.

Several dogs were said to have fallen "seriously unwell" after consuming a toxic substance in Canvey Island at the end of 2024.

Essex Police said the incidents were reported at Kismet Park, off Eastern Esplanade on the island.

Officers released the arrested man on bail with "strict monitoring conditions" after questioning him on Friday.

The force said its investigation would continue alongside both Castle Point Borough Council and the RSPCA.

Castle Point's district commander, Ch Insp Paul Hogben, thanked residents for providing information.

"We've worked closely with partners on this investigation to reach this point, but crucially our enquiries have relied heavily on the help of the public," he said.

"I know the public have worked hard to remain vigilant in the park, offering us intelligence and evidence to assist us, and this has been invaluable."
