Mayor 'proud' of pop-up prom outfit scheme

A Telford and Wrekin mayor has said that pop-up prom schemes around the borough made her proud, as they were making a difference to young people.

The pop-ups see donated dresses, suits, shoes and accessories put out to be taken for free ahead of the party season.

Councillor Helena Morgan, Mayor of Madeley, told the town council that end-of-year proms had become a tradition that was difficult to afford.

"It has become a real spectacle but it is not achievable for some people to be able to do that, " she said.

"Keeping up can be difficult," she added.

The scheme has already seen pop-ups in Newport, Oakengates and Stirchley, with more dates planned in Ketley, Brookside, Leegomery, Donnington, St George's and Dawley.

Donations are taken at Jubilee House in Madeley, including from local companies like Vintage Corner.

The outfits are for students attending year six,11 and 13 summer school proms, which are usually held from May onwards.

"To see the difference it makes is something we are particularly proud to see," said Morgan.
