At least 1,450 electric vehicle (EV) chargers are to be installed in areas without off-street parking after a council secured more than £2.8m in government funding.

West Northamptonshire Council said the money would support its new electric vehicle strategy.

A spokesperson said the authority wanted to help people, who did not own a driveway, to benefit from "the lower costs of running electric cars".

The government cash meant the council could hire a private company to install the EV chargers, they added.

Rebecca Breese, the council's Conservative cabinet member for environment, recycling and waste, said: "We are committed to embracing greener transport in West Northamptonshire and reducing our carbon footprint, whilst letting everyone benefit from the newer technologies."
