A 14-year-old boy was killed when a van he was a passenger in left a motorway and crashed into a tree, police have said.

Emergency services were called just after 12:15 BST on Sunday after the Peugeot van left the southbound M6 between junctions 34 and 33 in Lancashire.

Lancashire Police said the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

His father, a man in his 30s who was driving the van, suffered serious injuries and has been taken to hospital, the force said.

National Highways said earlier that an air ambulance had been called to the southbound carriageway.

Motorists have been warned of significant delays following the collision.

Police are appealing for anyone with dashcam or mobile phone footage to come forward.
