Preliminary work for a project to cut congestion on a major A-road will start later this month.

South-facing slip roads will be built for the A34 at Lodge Hill, near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, along with improved provision for cyclists and pedestrians.

Oxfordshire County Council told residents in a letter that it expects the main interchange works to be finished by the end of summer 2026.

Other work will provide an upgraded lay-by on the A34 southbound between Milton and Chilton Interchanges.

A site compound will be built off the Oxford Road from 10 February between 09:30 and 15:00 Monday to Friday and vegetation, trees and scrub will be cleared.

The council said it expects work on the lay-by to take about six months.

For that work to be done, there will be narrow lanes and a 50mph (80.5km/h) speed limit put in place on the A34 southbound between Milton and Chilton Interchanges between April and October.

Further information about the authority's plans and traffic management will be available at a public information event at Long Furlong Community Centre in Abingdon from 14:00 to 18:00 GMT on 21 March.

The project was previously granted £17.33m through the government's Brownfield, Infrastructure and Land (BIL) Fund.
