Redevelopment work has begun to improve a popular outdoor market.

The £5.2m works on Bilston Outdoor Market aim to maximise the site's visibility and improve access from neighbouring public transport stations.

Some existing structures have been demolished, and a multi-use events and market space will be created.

"It is good to see the project moving towards the main works with the foundations going down," said councillor Bhupinder Gakhal, cabinet member for resident services at the City of Wolverhampton Council. "We will soon see our fantastic new-look market emerging from the ground."

"While the improvement works are taking place, I would urge visitors to get along to the indoor market and temporary outdoor market and continue to support their local traders.

"It is important for our traditional local centres to flourish, and this scheme builds substantially on the investment already made in Bilston in recent years," he added.

The 200-year-old outdoor market relocated to Bert Turner Boulevard, High Street and Church Street last October to make way for the works.

Other improvements include improved landscaping, new retail units and toilets, and a taller canopy to cover the stalls.

The city council said the indoor market remained open as usual during the improvements, and opening days and times remained the same.
