Cathedral to host knitted D-Day exhibition

An exhibition of knitted and crocheted scenes of the D-Day landings stretching 80m (262ft) long will be showcased at Peterborough Cathedral.

Organisers of The Longest Yarn said each depiction from the World War Two battle would be "historically accurate" and available to view at the cathedral between 4 March and 1 April.

Hundreds of volunteers from around the world have created the scenes, which include landing crafts, soldiers and beaches.

The financially struggling cathedral has requested a £2.50 donation to view it.

Maria Elsey, head of operations, said it was "delighted to host The Longest Yarn at the cathedral", with its "fascinating blend of artistry and history that will inspire and educate all who come to see it".

It comes after Peterborough Cathedral launched its urgent fundraising appeal, stating it needed to raise £300,000 by the end of the financial year to keep its doors open every day of the week.
