Opinion divided over homes plan for green belt
Residents of a small village in the Surrey countryside have voiced concerns over plans to build 50 new homes.
The proposed development, if given the go-ahead, would be on an 8.3 hectare site of green belt land north of Chelsham Road, on the edge of Warlingham and towards Chelsham.
The development would also include a 72-bed care home.
Residents shared their opinions on social media while the developers, Welbeck Land, said they hoped to transform the site into a "vibrant and mixed community".
Robert, who has lived in Warlingham for 20 years, says he no longer "recognises or enjoys" the village, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
He added "roads crumbling, traffic, roadworks and rising crime" contributed to this.
Another resident named CJ, who also lives locally, said: "Nobody wants this. Our area doesn't need more people."
However, some residents said they could see some positives about the scheme.
They said there was "very little impact on the so-called green belt" and more homes were needed.
A resident wrote on social media: "People should be more concerned about the swathes of golf courses ripping the heart out of the countryside, rather than new homes."
A Welbeck Land spokesperson said: "Our plans include delivering up to 50 homes and a care home for up to 72 beds to provide help and support for elderly residents.
"Included in the application is new landscaping, a children's play area and a biodiversity enhancement area.
"We are committed to improving walking and cycling connections into the centre of Warlingham which will improve accessibility for all."
People can comment on the application on Tandridge District Council's website until 23 February.
The planning committee is due to decide on the proposal by 10 April.
