Officers were called to Melrose Road on Thursday morning

A man has suffered serious injuries and two people have been arrested after an assault in Gainsborough.

Lincolnshire Police said officers were called to Melrose Road at 00:42 BST on Thursday to reports of an "altercation" involving a weapon.

A man was treated at the scene for injuries that were serious but not believed to be life threatening, a spokesperson for the force said.

A 39-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm.

"What that weapon was, and the circumstances of the incident, are forming part of our inquiry," the spokesperson added.

"It is believed that at least some of the people involved were known to each other, and work is ongoing to identify everyone involved."
