A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a man in Beverley town centre.

Humberside Police were called to Lairgate, near the junction with Saturday Market, to reports of a serious assault in the early hours of Saturday.

Emergency services found a man with life-threatening injuries at about 01:00 GMT and he was taken to hospital, where he later died.

Officers arrested a 43-year-old man at the scene on suspicion of murder and possession of Class B drugs, who remains in custody.

Senior investigating officer Leanne Murphy said although the investigation was in its early stages, the incident was believed to be between two individuals known to each other, with no wider risk to the public.

"A scene guard remains in place on Lairgate, at the junction with the entrance to Saturday Market, to ensure my team are able to conduct their investigation and establish the circumstances that led to the man's death," she said.

Ms Murphy added a road closure was in place between the junction for Saturday Market and Newbegin and asked the public to avoid the area.

Increased patrols would be in place over the weekend, according to the force, and witnesses or those with dashcam footage were asked to come forward.
