A 90-year-old man has died two weeks after being hit by a car.

Peter Douglas had been walking on High West Street in Gateshead, near the Regent Street junction, at about 11:15 GMT on 23 December when he was struck by a black BMW 525d.

Mr Douglas was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries but died on Wednesday.

The driver of the BMW remained at the scene to assist officers with their enquiries, Northumbria Police said.

An investigation into the continues continues and police are asking anyone with information to contact them.

Mr Douglas's next of kin were being supported by officers, the force added.
