Grace Bennalick said her apprenticeship had allowed her to "earn while learning"

Apprentices across the island have encouraged people of all ages to consider following in their footsteps.

The Guernsey Institute (TGI) offers a range of apprenticeship courses including plumbing, construction and hair dressing.

Grace Bennalick, a professional cookery apprentice, works at the Duke of Richmond four days a week as a commis chef and attends classes at TGI once a week.

She said taking the course had helped her build confidence: "It's always fun to learn new skills and develop what I already know."

Zane is two-and-a-half years into his four-year course

Zane Shepherd, a carpentry and joinery apprentice, said he was "really enjoying" his course and that it gave "a good insight" for a future career.

"I really like the hands-on work - I didn't want to be sat down in an office."

Zane works at Breton Construction four days a week and attends classes at TGI once a week.

Chris Torode, head of apprenticeships at TGI, said: "We've got apprentices who start once they come out of school. But our oldest apprentice is 50 years old."

When asked what he would say to someone thinking of pursuing an apprenticeship he said they should "go for it".

Mr Torode added: "This year marks our 75th anniversary of apprenticeships on island and as a former apprentice myself I take pride in apprenticeships- they're a passion."
