Predator jailed for raping drunk teenage girl

A man who sexually assaulted and raped an “extremely drunk" 16-year-old girl has been jailed by a judge who branded his behaviour "predatory".
Callum Johnstone, 29, of Earls Road, Whitehaven, was high on alcohol and cocaine when he led the teen to a park and "took advantage" of her, Carlisle Crown Court heard.
He was found guilty of rape and assault over the August 2022 attack and sentenced on Friday to six years and six months’ jail.
In sentencing, Judge Nicholas Barker told Johnstone: "I am satisfied that you behaved in a predatory manner towards her that night. You were 26, she was an extremely drunk 16-year-old girl."
The court heard Johnstone had earlier sat for a prolonged period with the girl in a Whitehaven bar.
CCTV showed her at times resting her head on a table and then stumbling on a dance floor.
Judge Barker said a bystander warned Johnstone off the girl, but he instead followed her from the bar and took her to a nearby park by “guiding her, or at least holding her up” on the way.
“I am satisfied that the only reason that you were sat there with her [in the bar] was because you harboured a sexual interest towards her," Judge Barker added.
'Funny, loving daughter'
As he read out the girl’s victim impact statement, prosecutor Tim Evans told the court she was “scared throughout that no one would believe her” about the assault.
"I know what I felt. I know how scary it was," she said in her statement.
"It's always going to be in my mind, no matter how much I try to distract myself."
The girl's mother described the family being left "broken", with their lives "changed completely".
She said: "I doubt I will ever get my funny, loving daughter back.
"But if this experience gives just some people the courage to speak out about rape and sexual assault, and report it, then hopefully our awful experience will not have been wasted."
Johnstone has been added to the sex offenders register indefinitely and barred from working with children and vulnerable adults.
