Woman dies in suspected hit and run crash

A man has been arrested following the death of a woman in a suspected hit and run in Filey.

The woman, aged 85, was found seriously injured in Station Road at around 09:00 GMT on Friday and died in hospital on Saturday.

North Yorkshire Police said it was initially believed the woman had fallen but further inquiries established she had been hit by a white van and the driver failed to stop at the scene.

A spokesperson for the force said a man had since been arrested and remained in police custody for questioning.

Anyone with information or dashcam footage of the collision is asked to contact North Yorkshire Police.

According to police, the woman had been wearing a distinctive red coat and had been walking with the assistance of a walking aid.
