Candles will be lit by survivors of the Holocaust and their families at a special ceremony at Truro Cathedral to mark Holocaust Memorial Day, organisers have said.

This year's event marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi's largest concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

It remembers more than six million Jews and the millions of other people killed by the Nazi regime as well as victims of other genocides.

The event, which starts at 12.00 GMT on Monday, also includes a presentation from students at Truro School and a poem from Cornwall People First, the charity for adults with learning difficulties or autism.

A video message from lawyer and television presenter Rob Rinder will also be played at the event.

His Lithuanian grandfather Morris was one of the "Windermere children" who arrived in Cumbria after escaping the Holocaust.

Devon and Cornwall's Chief Constable James Vaughan is due to speak at the events.

There will also be stalls and information from community groups representing people who have faced prejudice or persecution.

Groups including Jewish organisation Kehillat Kernow, Cornwall Pride, transgender and non-binary support group Transparent Presence, Black Voices Cornwall, and TravellerSpace, which supports gypsies and travellers, are amongst those who will be in the cathedral between 11:00-16:00.

The cathedral is also hosting a free exhibition of artwork produced by schools on the theme of For A Better Future until Tuesday 28 January.
