A man in his 20s has been knocked unconscious during a racially motivated hate crime in Belfast city centre, police have said.

Two men and a woman were walking on Royal Avenue in the early hours of Sunday morning when they were approached by a group of people.

They began directing verbal racial abuse towards one of the men, before pushing him and assaulting him.

After he was knocked out, the victim sustained an injury to his eye and cheek, and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police said their enquiries are ongoing and have appealed for information.
