Supermarket chain Sainsbury's has announced plans for a state-of-the-art store in Cornwall that would create about 100 jobs.

The firm said it was preparing to submit a planning application to Cornwall Council for a new site in Falmouth on brownfield land next to its current supermarket off Falmouth Road.

The company added the store would be twice the size of its current one and included a petrol station and an electric vehicle charging hub.

If the multi-million pound plans went ahead, Sainsbury's said the current store, car park and units on the adjacent Ponsharden industrial estate would be redeveloped into housing.

Sainsbury's previously secured planning permission for a replacement store on the same site in 2013, but the scheme did not progress.

Patrick Dunne, Sainsbury's chief property and procurement officer and managing director of Smart Charge, said the new store would provide a "range of substantial benefits" to the local community.

Mr Dunne added: "If our plans are approved, this would represent one of the largest new supermarkets we've opened in the UK for years, demonstrating our confidence in Falmouth and Penryn as a key area of investment for Sainsbury's."
