A molester who threatened to break a woman's neck as he tried to rape her has been jailed for 10 years.

Arshad Chaudrhy, 50, groped a 16-year-old girl and attempted to rape a 20-year-old woman, Teesside Crown Court heard.

Both victims said they had suffered severe mental health problems as a consequence of Chaudrhy's actions.

Chaudrhy, a pizza shop owner from Hartlepool, had denied any wrongdoing, but was found guilty of nine offences including sexual assault and attempted rape.

'Profound affect'

Chaudrhy, who was assisted in court by an Urdu interpreter, had groped both young women before becoming increasingly forceful in his sexual advances, the court heard.

Attempting to rape his second victim, he told her he would break her neck if she did not comply, prosecutor Jon Harley said.

In a statement read to the court, the 16-year-old victim said he had left her "petrified" of men, stating her life had taken a downward spiral after she turned to drugs to try and block out the memory of what Chaudrhy had done.

She said she had mental health problems and struggled to sleep.

The second victim said she had anxiety and depression, and lived in "constant fear" of someone else trying to abuse her as Chaudrhy had.

Judge Geoffrey Marson KC said Chaudrhy, of York Road in Hartlepool, had had a "profound" affect on his victims.

A sexual harm prevention order limiting Chaudrhy's contact with young women was also made, to last indefinitely.
