Protesters have gathered to voice concerns over plans to build up to 200 homes on the edge of a national park.

More than 80 people have so far officially objected to the proposed development on fields connecting Holbury and Blackfield in Hampshire.

Wates Developments said its planning application was "in response to the acute shortfall in housing delivery within New Forest district".

At a meeting on Saturday, campaigners said the area was unsuitable for more buildings and cars.

Organiser Chris Hems, from Hands Off Our Forest and Farmland, said: "Yes, we need houses but the main thing is, it's next to the New Forest park and that should not be allowed.

"National framework policies are quite clear on what can be built near these national parks."

New Forest Commoner Paula Oakley said: "It's hard enough to get out of the drive normally, the roads are far too fast.

"There are loads of areas... that could be built on other than these fields."

Wates Developments said three-quarters of the 60-acre site would be green space, with 70 affordable homes included in the development.

A spokesperson for the company said: "In the New Forest district, 1,501 new homes a year are required a year to meet government targets, with an average of 187 new homes added per year since 2021.

"Alongside this, there are more than 2,000 households locally waiting for affordable housing.

"Our proposals will be a real step forward in providing more new homes for people."

The land, off Rollestone Road, is part of the Lynwood Farm estate.

The New Forest National Park Authority has objected to the plan, which is being consulted on by New Forest District Council.
