Work on Abington Street and Fish Street was paused during the winter months

An end is in sight for a delayed town centre regeneration project which has meant restrictions in a main shopping area.

The redevelopment of Abington Street and Fish Street in Northampton began in February last year and was due to be finished in early 2025.

However, work was paused during the winter months following "quality concerns" with "bespoke materials" for the scheme.

West Northamptonshire Council (WNC) said the "majority of final touches was expected by the end of May" and the completed work would bring new paving, seating and landscaping features to the shopping streets.

The council thanked local people and businesses for their patience during the work and subsequent delay.

It said work had resumed in March and had included "repaving, drainage works, tree installations, and the refurbishment of the Cobbler's Last statue."

The council said: "The current focus is on street furniture, lighting and paving, with catenary lighting to be installed later this summer."

The work is part of a multi-million pound regeneration of Northampton town centre.
