Firm plans mast extension to link up smart meters

A telecommunications company said plans to add a new antenna to an existing mast would provide smart metering services to local residents.

Writing to King's Lynn and West Norfolk Borough Council, Cellnex UK said the antenna would increase the height of the mast in Gaywood by 2.6m (8.5ft), making it 36.5m (120ft) in total.

Concerns had been raised by local Liberal Democrat councillor David Sayers that an entirely new mast could be built in the area.

However, the company said it would be developing its existing infrastructure close to the Gaywood River, which would "provide benefits to residents and businesses".

Water companies are in the process of rolling out smart meters to properties, but for those to work they need to be able to connect to a network.

Under planning rules, companies can add to the height of existing masts with upgrades, as long as they do not exceed 6m (19.7ft).

A spokesman for Cellnex UK said it wanted "to reassure residents that we are committed to carrying out this work with care and consideration".

"Over the coming weeks, our focus will be on timely communication with the community throughout the process," it added.
