Teenager killed by falling tree during storm named
A teenage driver killed by a falling tree during Storm Éowyn has been named.
Calum Carmichael, 19, was driving a blue Ford Focus on the B743 in Mauchline, East Ayrshire at about 07:10 on Friday when the tree was torn out the ground by strong winds and struck his vehicle.
Emergency crews were called to the scene and transported Mr Carmichael, of New Cumnock, for treatment.
He was taken to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, but died from his injuries on Saturday.
The crash happened just before a red weather alert for wind came into force.
First minister John Swinney was among those to offer condolences to his family.
He said: "This is tragic and heartbreaking news. Our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of the man who has died."
Sgt Chris McColm said: "Our thoughts remain with Calum's family and friends at this very difficult time."
Mr Carmichael is the second person confirmed to have died following Friday's storm.
Kacper Dudek, 20, was killed in a similar incident near Ballinalecky Cross in County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland on Friday morning.
