A seal pup that was found to be half the weight it should be for its age has been rescued in Guernsey.

The pup, which has been named Wide Awake, was discovered at Moulin Huet on Thursday and found to be dehydrated and exhausted.

The animal was 22kg (3st 7lb) and aggressive towards rescuers - but that was a "good sign", according to Geoff George, head of marine mammals at the GSPCA.

Wide Awake will now join three other rescued pups, Dark Horse, Swish and Fireworks, who each require 24 hour care.

Mr George said: "It is not easy caring for such sick seal pups when they arrive needing 24 hour care and without us these pups wouldn't be alive today."

The four pups will now be moved to temporary accommodation while the GSPCA prepares the construction of a new facility to house its rescues.

Discussing the new pups, Steve Byrne, GSPCA manager, said: "We are pleased that all are doing well considering how poorly they were when rescued by Geoff and the team."
