The secret tunnel that saved a besieged city
After the Yugoslavia break-up in the early 1990s, several ethnic wars and conflicts arose. One of the most violent was the Bosnian war in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1992-1995). In 1992, Serbian forces surrounded Sarajevo, the capital, cutting its supply of food, water, and other much-needed materials. Volunteers from the city organised and dug up a 720 m long and about 1.50 m high tunnel using only hands, shovels, and hacks. The construction lasted four months. For more than three years, thousands of soldiers and civilians crossed the tunnel daily.
