John Morris: 'I was very proud to be selected'

For John Morris, serving alongside the elite SAS unit was always a dream.

When he joined the Raiding Support Regiment, his role was supporting special forces with heavy artillery.

His service took him to Africa, Italy and Yugoslavia to fight with the Partisans.

He recounted tales of downing Rakis on the way to collect mail and climbing mountains in Albania.

Mr Morris also touched on the guilt he felt when he lost friends.

"My unit went to Greece and a lot of our people were killed, a lot of my mates," he said.

We Were There aims to collect as many first-hand accounts as possible by 2025, the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, to preserve veterans' accounts for future generations.

The BBC is currently working on the project with a number of partners including the Normandy Memorial Trust and Royal British Legion. Some of the stories collected may be shared with our partners and used on BBC News platforms.
