Homes had to be evacuated on a large housing estate in Nottingham after a gas leak, a fire service said.

Multiple crews were called to Austey Avenue on the Lenton Abbey estate on Thursday afternoon, when a cordon was in place to stop members of the public entering the area.

Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service warned the public to avoid the area while crews dealt with the leak.

A spokesperson said the leak had been made safe before 14:20 GMT and that the fire service was looking to allow residents back into their properties shortly.

The nearby Sheila Roper Community Centre had been opened for anyone displaced by the gas leak.

Angie Stanton, the community centre manager, said she received a call from her son, a firefighter at Stapleford Fire Station, asking if it could be used for displaced residents.

"We said [people] could stay however long they needed to. If you need us, we're there," she said.

"That's how it works in the community."
