The man was arrested in Coventry on Thursday morning

A man has appeared in court accused of belonging to a people smuggling network operating in France.

The man, who is in his 20s and is an Iraqi national, was originally arrested in France but illegally fled to UK and claimed asylum.

He was apprehended in Coventry by officers from the National Crime Agency on Thursday morning.

The man, who has not been named, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday and has been remanded in custody ahead of extradition.

He is set to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court for a final extradition hearing on 21 July.
