Newcastle Airport wants to increase baggage areas and retail units

Plans for a bigger departure lounge at an airport have been submitted.

Airport bosses are seeking permission to build a three-storey extension to Newcastle International's eastern terminal.

In a planning application to Newcastle City Council, officials said the current size was "reducing the passenger experience".

They said a bigger baggage claim area and departure lounge would help reduce overcrowding during busy periods.

The airport's size is currently causing delays to baggage pickups and a lack of seating in retail areas, officials claim.

An expansion would allow for an extra luggage carousel to be installed and new shops to open at the airport, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.

The local authority will consider the application at a later date.
