Noise concerns over university's late licence bid

Residents living next to a university college which has applied for an outdoor event and alcohol licence have said they are worried about future "noise and nuisance".
The bid, for Durham University's St Mary's College on Elvet Hill Road, includes plans to host plays, live music and dance performances indoors until 00:30 on weekends, with outdoor events to end at 23:30.
But opponents said nearby colleges that already have licences had disrupted their lives, with one saying their mental health had been affected.
Durham University said it was "fully committed" to being considerate and said these complaints were not about St Mary's College.
One resident who objected to the council said her family and neighbours had been disturbed by other "countless outdoor live music events".
They were also followed by "cohorts of drunk students yelling and chanting whilst walking up our street to return to their houses," the objector said.
"The noise has not only affected us physically by interrupting our sleep and our young child, but has also begun to take a significant toll on my mental health.
Durham County Council was told of one incident when a group of students was seen running in the gardens of nearby properties, the Local Democracy Reporting Service said.
Ricky Cohen, senior operations manager at Durham University, said: "Importantly, the complaints do not directly relate to St Mary's College, however, we want to assure them that the university takes their concerns seriously.
"We are fully committed to being considerate and respectful neighbours and have carefully shaped the licence request with this in mind."
