The death of an elderly man has prompted a police investigation, after he suffered serious injuries near a Sunderland shopping centre last week.

William Brindley, 77, from Lambton, was taken to hospital after being injured between 12:00 and 14:00 BST on Wednesday 7 May in the area of The Galleries in Washington.

Mr Brindley died on Sunday following the incident, Northumbria Police have said.

His death is not being treated as suspicious, but police have urged anyone with information, or dashcam footage from the area, to come forward.

At the time of the accident, Mr Brindley was wearing a black coat, a black wool hat, black trousers and black shoes, and was carrying a walking stick.
